Barossa wines shine in James Suckling’s Top 100 Australian Wines 2017

Congratulations to 29 Barossa wines, representing 18 wine brands, who have been named in James Suckling’s highly regarded Top 100 Australian Wines of 2017.

The coveted title of Australian Wine of the Year went to Henschke’s Hill of Grace 2012, with Mr Suckling noting:  “Australia’s ultimate single-vineyard wine, Henschke Shiraz Eden Valley Hill of Grace Vineyard 2012, is the Australian Wine of the Year 2017. As an excellent example of 2012 vintage, the wine soars to impressive heights. With vines dating back to the 1860s, the vineyard has a carefully managed regime that focuses on marrying biodynamically farmed grapes with the rich heritage of the site.

Runner up in position #2 was also filled by a Barossa wine, the innovative Sami-Odi’s Hoffmann-Dallwitz Shiraz 2016;  “With a superb understanding of great wines and a worldly palate, winemaker Fraser McKinley is penning a contemporary script of Barossa Valley wine while working with ancient vines. Among the most compelling Australian wines made today, these wines are absolutely exceptional.”

Representing such a significant proportion of awarded wines speaks volumes of Barossa’s commitment to exceptional quality.  Wines with stories of provenance and terroir particularly featured in this year’s list.

While Shiraz is a star variety, as expected, it is exciting to see our ‘other’ regional heroes also acknowledged in such a prestigious platform.
